Scorpius Malfoy

This turpentine chaser's got kick
And the rag that it's soaked in is rich
But the fumes aid the pace of my cleaning
And as soon as I'm done, I am gone.

BASIC INFO
Name: Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy
Age & Birthday: 21, 02/05/2006 (☉ Aquarius / ☽ Aries / ↑ Libra)
Blood Status: Pureblood, extremely so.
Schooling: Hogwarts, Slytherin, 2017-24
Occupation: Aspiring living portraiture artist and classical oil painter. He has a semi-reliable clientele and has had one gallery showing. Scorpius could ask his wealthy parents for money whenever he likes, but he's too proud to admit when his commissions can't cover the cost of living.
Sexuality: Uncomfortably bisexual.
Gender & Pronouns: Male, he/him

APPEARANCE
Height: 6'1"
Hair: Sandy blond and wavy, always kept short and tidy.
Eyes: Cold blue and hooded; very similar to his father. Usually hidden behind glasses.
Manner of Dress: Plain, muted colors that don't reflect the Malfoy history or sense of drama at all. He could be easily mistaken for a Muggle, so long as you never bring up pop culture or modern technology. Scorpius dresses as though he'd like to fade into the crowd.
General Vibes: A tense young man who holds himself apart from others, probably from a sense of superiority (with just a hint of shyness).
Notable Features:
  • Slim and bony with a freakishly long swanlike neck. Scorpius is already tall, but because he's so long it's easy to misremember him as even taller.
  • Scorpius doesn't like tattoos. Certainly not on himself, and usually not on others either.
  • His accent is extremely posh and he calls most people by their surnames, even close friends.
  • He really does look a lot like his father, just softer and warmer.

  • PERSONALITY
Gloomy & Cold Scorpius is far from friendly. He keeps to himself and if he has to interact with strangers, he's aloof and chilly. Scorpius is reluctant to open up to strangers, and the most that he'll reveal to them is that he's a pretty unhappy person. Scorpius usually doesn't have anything positive to say, and the more you press him to look on the bright side, the more clouds he sees. Scorpius comes off as uncaring and mean-spirited.
Alert Scorpius is always paying attention, and picks up on little details with relative ease. His sharp memory helps a lot with this, especially when it comes to visual details. It goes beyond that, though. Scorpius is often the first to notice if someone's acting unusual or if there's a new face in the building. He never puts himself out there, and instead keeps to the shadows, watching.
Defensive & Fearful All of this is, of course, a defense mechanism. Scorpius anticipates the worst in people, and has found the best way to keep them away is to put up lots and lots of walls. He's anxious and nervous, and none of his reluctance is due to any sort of real sense of social or blood superiority. People just make him nervous, and when he's nervous he gets defensive, and when he gets defensive he gets snippy. He has a short temper, and is quick to snap back at anyone who makes him feel uncomfortable (which is most people). If he doesn't have the upper hand, he immediately feels at least a bit threatened.
Adoring & Steady But for those that have managed to burrow past all of his defenses, Scorpius is an adoring friend and a steady rock. He's someone you can call at any hour of the night and he'll get up and talk to you. If you need a place to stay, he'll find space. He might not be much sweeter with people he loves, but he'd do anything for them. He's an enabling sort of friend who might be fine complaining about his friends' bad habits, but would never do anything meaningful to stop them. Scorpius will never really dissuade you from your bad ideas. Instead he'll be your north star, a steady anchor you can always find in his flat, working on a painting and waiting for you.
Dishonest But don't mistake adoration for absolute loyalty and obedience. Scorpius has a mind of his own, and it's risky to take anything he promises at face value. You can tell him not to do something, and he might swear he won't, only to turn around and see if he can get away with it anyway. He's contrary and dislikes boring. Scorpius will choose a difficult but interesting solution over something tried and true every time.
Creative Perhaps made even more dangerous because Scorpius is very creative. He can think outside of the box and beyond the rules, and loves to be entertained. Anyone who he deems too boring is beneath his notice, and he really looks down on them. Of course this applies to his art as well, as critics praise him for interesting composition, color and lighting.
Ambitious & Arrogant Scorpius is going to become a successful painter and he won't settle for anything less. He won't deign to get another day job, and he won't listen to anyone telling him to be more realistic. He's a hard worker, but thinks very highly of himself and his abilities. Sometimes this is at war with his insecurities, but it only serves to make him double down on his decisions. He hates to be told he was wrong, and judges people harshly if he isn't able to figure them out. People who are bubbly rays of sunshine have a particularly hard time with Scorpius, even when he's trying to be nice. Niceness doesn't come naturally to him.
Needy Scorpius is spoiled, and is used to mattering a great deal. He was (and still is) the center of his parents' universe. He's also deeply insecure about his likability, appearance and personality, and is always on the lookout for reassurance from his friends and family. He wants their input and attention frequently. He's happy to be their home port, but hates when they stray too far from him.
Naive Scorpius didn't do well in school, knows virtually nothing about the muggle world, and doesn't understand politics. His parents instilled in him that purism is terrible and pureblood culture was abusive, but he's been largely sheltered from the realities of it. Entering Hogwarts and experiencing first hand the realities of his parents' childhoods was a real culture shock.

    HISTORY
    Notable Family Members:
Draco Malfoy, father, potioneer and alchemist. A fussy and somewhat sad man, but a dedicated father and husband. He aspires to be a footnote in the history books.
Astoria Greengrass-Malfoy, mother, businesswoman. Vivacious and modern as purebloods go. Affectionately exasperated with her gloomy husband and son.

    Lucius Malfoy, grandfather.
    Narcissa Malfoy, grandmother.

    Andromeda Black, great aunt.
Edward "Teddy" Lupin, second cousin. The closest thing Scorpius has to a sibling.

    Hometown: Knockturn Alley, London, UK
Apartment: Floor 3, #34, with Albus Potter.
    History:
DRACO & ASTORIA Draco's parents didn't like Astoria, the younger sister of one of Draco's classmates. They connected after the war, knowing little about one another. She was pureblood, technically, but not on the same level as their son. The family's reputation was in shambles, and Draco was their last chance of ingratiating themselves back into pureblood society. Draco, however, resisted any attempts to pull him into the spotlight. He never gave interviews about his time as an unwilling teenage Death Eater, he never commented on his connection to Harry Potter, and he certainly never talked about his time with Voldemort. He vanished, as far as the public could tell. Maybe he died.

The Malfoy dream of regaining their former status was doomed. They had burnt every last bridge, and almost lost Draco, too, when he stood up and defended his choice to marry Astoria. Rather than alienate him forever, Lucius and Narcissa gave their blessing. Astoria knew then that she'd made the right choice.

A BABY Draco and Astoria struggled to conceive. Astoria blamed it on the drafty halls of the Malfoy manor, and didn't tell her in-laws that she and Draco had been seeing healers about the matter. Surely it was just because of the chilly countryside, or maybe the stress Draco was under. It didn't make Lucius and Narcissa like Astoria any more when she convinced Draco to move out of his family home to a flat in London. They liked her even less when she empowered him to leave his ministry job and start a small business with her. While Draco's parents saw her as a viper turning their son against them, Draco was relieved to have someone who wanted the same things he did. No more pureblood society, no more scheming, no more posturing for an audience, no more publicity. Both of them had been traumatized by the war, and when they finally had a son they wanted to give him the quiet, easy childhood they'd both been denied.

CHILDHOOD And they succeeded. Scorpius was a sensitive kid, but clever and artistic. Astoria remembers his age because he was born the same year she started Greener Grasses Apothecary. Draco worked quietly in the back brewing unusual potions, while she managed the business itself. Scorpius was often underfoot, but didn't take much interest in potions or money. Draco's growing collection of dart artifacts fascinated him, but they were kept under lock and key. Sometimes he would put on robes to follow his stern father around as he worked out a trade with some other collector, which made him feel important.

Still, his parents were busy, and sometimes Scorpius was put in the care of a babysitter named Marion Bell. Scorpius didn't make the connection between this young girl and her mother that he might have bullied as a teen, at least not until Scorpius started talking about Scamanders and Weasleys. Astoria told him to calm down and let Scorpius make friends, which stopped Draco from doing anything dramatic. Scorpius, for his part, was enjoying himself. He was still a gloomy little boy, but the bright personalities of Rose, Hugo, Lysander and Lorcan were exciting. Marion let him do things his parents would never. It fostered a tiny adventurous spark in him.

HOGWARTS Scorpius had known, vaguely, about hi family history. Just the broad strokes. They'd served Voldemort, but they regretted it. They were sorry, and they did the right thing by siding with the good guys. Of course, it was much more complicated than that. To those whose families sided with Voldemort, the Malfoys were cowardly traitors who jumped ship like rats when the Death Eaters fell. Some of his classmates had grandparents and parents locked up because of his family. To the rest of the wizarding world, the Malfoys were opportunists. His father and grandparents didn't spend a second in prison for their crimes. His father had let the Death Eaters into Hogwarts. People had died.

Scorpius was sent to Slytherin (he didn't mind) but that didn't make his life much easier. Where Draco had demanded "Do you know who my father is?!" Scorpius said "What did you say about my father?!" He routinely got into fights he couldn't win, and ended up becoming an easy target in school. Along the way, he became unlikely friends with Albus Potter. Or maybe they were inevitable friends. In time Albus became smart and popular, and Scorpius found sanctuary in his shadow. People wanted Albus around, so they had to tolerate Scorpius.

ARTIST Scorpius did poorly in school, but his artistic skills were remarkable. He drew and painted at a level that left his peers in the dust. He experimented with living portraiture without quite knowing what he was doing (upsetting results, honestly). This was Narcissa's in. She started sending him expensive art supplies and easels, and paid for tutors over the summer. Astoria wasn't thrilled, but she and Narcissa reached a sort of truce. It was further strengthened by the fact that Narcissa was Scorpius' lifeline to Teddy Lupin. Technically a distant cousin, but Narcissa was starved for family. She and Andromeda had reconnected, which meant family holidays where Scorpius could try to desperately impress Teddy with recent paintings. Maybe things would never be easy for the Malfoy-Blacks, but they were better than they'd been in decades.

POST-SCHOOL Scorpius was a poor student. He did not get many NEWTs, and his job prospects were... slim. His grandparents strained their remaining connections to get him a job in the ministry as an assistant to [OPEN POLITICIAN], and Scorpius lasted about six weeks before he abruptly quit. It wasn't a good look for anyone, and no one was eager to give Scorpius a second chance. He'd been absolutely miserable and the anxiety had kept him up for nights on end. Arguments with his family drove him further into misery, and that's when he angrily announced he was going to become a painter.

And Scorpius tried. To an extent, he succeeded. He got a gallery showing that received positive reviews. He made enough connections to earn a network of clients who were interested in commissioning him. In the aging world of living portraiture artists, Scorpius Malfoy is the one to watch. Unfortunately, being an artist still means living thin and counting coins. He could ask his family for help, of course, but Scorpius is determined to prove he can do this on his own. Even if it means moving into this strange building and splitting rent with Albus Potter.

    MISCELLANEOUS
Wand: Willow, vouivre scale core, 12", stiff. A long, thin wand, stained dark to show off the elaborate silver inlay.
Patronus: Some long-necked, long-legged water bird. Scorpius has only cast the spell once or twice, and not very well. (Great Egret)
Familiar: Leticia, a raven. He's had Letty since he was 11. She knows a smattering of English vocabulary words and phrases. While she's more articulate than an average, non-magical raven, she can't hold real conversations.
Favorite Quidditch Team: Honestly, he can't be bothered to care about sports, but he'll root for whoever his close friends are currently supporting.
Skills: Sketching, oil painting (portraits, landscapes, still life), living portraiture, moving paintings, has dabbled in watercolours.
    Fun Facts:
    - At Hogwarts, Scorpius had an uncanny knack for finding the Room of Requirement whenever he sought it out.
-It's a quick ten minute walk to his parents' apothecary, and he regularly joins them for dinner.
